Porter took me to the coast for my birthday
:)
On the last day we were there, we drove south as far as we reasonably could in the day and have time to get home before very late. It was so wonderful! The view from the highway that runs along the coast is incredible. There were lots of places to stop and see amazing things.

If only we could’ve gotten to the redwood-forest gondolas before they closed.

I’ve seen redwoods before, but they were in the Yosemite National Park, not in the official “redwood forest.”

We drove the highway from Grants Pass to Crescent City in 04 and continued south. It was our first actual viewing of the Redwood trees. We stopped briefly at Jedidiah Smith Redwoods State Park. We felt like we were in a Cathedral when we walked through the trees. Awe inspiring to think some of the trees are up to 300 ft high and probably a thousand years old. So nice you could take the trip.

We would like to see some pictures if there are any available!

I’ve been along that route several times, it’s utterly fantastic! I would love to see it as it was when the pioneers came.

I’m sorry Don, I didn’t take my camera! I should have, probably, but I enjoyed so much just looking at the scenery. I would suggest, though, going to flickr.com and looking up “Florence, OR,” “Cape Perpetua,” and “Humbug Mountain.” Those are all places we saw, and there is some nice photography up on flickr (better job than I could have done, I’m sure.)
Chris, that would have been something! Porter mentions that often. It must have been amazing. I saw pictures of the area surrounding the lighthouse in Florence in the early, hm, 1910s? It was all bare grass (no trees!) and they herded sheep up there. Crazy that it is so different now. Ahh…it must have been amazing to be one of the first ones there. Unbelievable.

I know that section of I-5! I was up and down through there and up between Roseburg and Eugene, this Summer. You might be interested in a Music Camp the Boohers put on in August.
Next time you travel there, you should get off at Yoncalla. There is a very cool place on Main Street, called, “Main Street Espresso”. If Rudy B. (owner), or Sarah are there, tell them I sent you.
